Mobility Assist
Regional India has a large number of children affected by diseases such as Polio. These
diseases affect the children at a young age and generally result in limb
deformities and/or paralysis. These disabilities mean that children are
unable to be mobile. Many are unable
to leave their village or attend school, some cannot even leave their house
because of these
mobility disabilities which hinder them from living a fulfilling life.
There is very little government support for corrective operations or aids such as calipers and wheel chairs.
Through support of programs such as our Mobility Assist, you have
the opportunity to
select a child that needs help to overcome their disability. Some children need
corrective operations, followed by physiotherapy and aids such as calipers
. For some children operations are not feasible, in these cases aids such as outdoor wheelchairs (called tricycles)
are an option which allow children to become mobile. Below are two examples of donations
improving the lives of children through corrective surgical procedures,
physiotherapy and mobility aids.

Burri is 13 years old. She contracted Polio when she
was an infant. The disease left her paralysed from the hips down.
Burri has never attended school because there was no one to carry
her there. In fact Burri has never left her village and has
not been outside her yard for 3 years. Her parents have been
lobbying the government for a tricycle (outdoor wheelchair) for 7
years with no progress.
We purchased a tricycle (at a cost of $120) for Burri and she
is now happily exploring her neighbourhood for the first time. Her
newfound mobility has now seen Burri be employed by a sewing
centre for disabled.

Minrani is 13 years of age. She was affected by Polio at a young age which
left her with deformed legs and unable to stand straight or walk
in a normal manner. Thanks to kind donations, Minrani has now had
corrective surgery on both legs and is currently undergoing
physiotherapy to help her regain mobility. Treatment such as this
costs a one time amount of $200-500, and will give a child the
opportunity to experience a new outlook on life.
